What garage door spring repair involves

Garage door spring repair is the replacement of the part that actually lifts your door. The opener only guides it. A torsion spring is a coiled steel spring mounted on a shaft over the door opening. As the door closes it winds up, and as the door opens it unwinds, handing back the stored force that makes a heavy door feel nearly weightless. Springs are rated in cycles, one cycle being one open and one close, and a standard spring will eventually wear out simply from use.

When a spring breaks, the sign is usually a sharp bang from the garage, followed by a door that won't lift or an opener that strains and stops. You may see a gap in the coil. The door feels extremely heavy by hand because it now weighs what it weighs, with nothing helping.

This is also the job that goes wrong when attempted at home. Stored force in a wound spring can injure hands, arms and faces, and the winding bars slip when the wrong size is used. Leave the door down, don't try to raise it, and have the spring changed by someone with the right tools.

Why call us

What we check before replacing a spring

Door weight and spring size

The spring has to match the door's weight, height and track. A spring that is too light never balances the door, and one that is too strong slams it open. We weigh up the door before choosing.

Torsion or extension

Most doors use torsion springs on a shaft over the opening. Some use extension springs that run along the side tracks. We replace the type your door was built for.

Both springs, not one

On a two-spring door, the one that is still intact has seen the same use as the one that broke. We usually replace both so the door lifts evenly. The decision is yours, and we explain why we recommend it.

Cables, drums and bearings

Springs and cables wear together. We check the cable ends, the drums, and the center and end bearings, since a worn bearing makes the new spring work harder.

Winding system

Some doors have an pre-wound tension system, others a standard winding cone. We identify which one your door has and wind it with bars made for the job, never screwdrivers or improvised tools.

How it works

How a spring replacement goes

  1. 01

You call and tell us what happened

Mention the bang, whether the door is open or shut, and how many springs you can see. Keep the door where it is.

  2. 02

We come out and inspect the door

A uniformed technician confirms the break, checks the cables, drums and rollers, and tests the door's balance.

  3. 03

We explain what we found and the price

You get an upfront quote for the springs and any other part that needs replacing, before any work begins.

  4. 04

    We replace, tension and balance

We remove the broken spring, fit the new one on the shaft, wind it to the correct tension, and balance the door. A spring replacement is usually done in one visit, and our repairs are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

FAQ

Spring repair questions

Can you repair a broken spring on a garage door?
A broken spring can't be repaired, it has to be replaced. A coil that has snapped cannot be rejoined safely, so the technician fits a new spring sized to your door and winds it to the right tension.
How often should you replace the springs on your garage door?
Springs are replaced when they wear out, not on a schedule. They are rated in cycles, so a door used many times a day will need new springs sooner than one opened occasionally. A higher-cycle spring lasts longer on a busy door. On an old, worn-out door, compare the cost of new springs with installing a new door.
Can I manually lift my garage door if the spring is broken?
It is not safe to try. With no spring helping, the door is as heavy as it really is, and it can drop on you or jam in the track. Leave the door as it is and call us.
Can I wind or replace the spring myself?
We advise against it. A wound torsion spring holds a lot of stored force, and the wrong tool can slip out of the cone and cause serious injury. Winding is the one step that should stay with a trained technician.
How much does a spring replacement cost?
The price depends on the spring type, the door's size and weight, and whether cables, drums or bearings also need replacing. We give an upfront quote after we have looked at the door and before any work begins.
Is a broken spring an emergency?
It is urgent if the door is stuck open or won't close, because the garage is exposed. Don't use the opener, keep people and cars clear, and call. The door should not be forced either way.
Why does my door feel stiff and slow in winter?
Cold stiffens grease and rubber, and that adds load to the springs. A garage door that sticks in cold weather often needs lubrication and a balance check, and a weak spring shows up fast when the grease thickens.
